Selling more firearms to the same people

“The best strategy for gun manufacturers is to convince people that they need lots of guns.”

That line is from a post over on iVoter.net about firearms marketing, written by Lisa Wade.  It’s a good article – I recommend it.  Here’s a link.

One of the points I found most interesting was the conclusion that – and I generalize, but still – over the last decade more guns have indeed been sold, but there has not been a corresponding increase in number of buyers.

In other words, the growth in firearms sales is from the same people are buying more guns, more or less.

That’s different than the popular belief that everyone everywhere is buying guns.  That popular belief serves to fuel disparate interests: it works for the anti-gun people, who scream that every man, woman, child, and horse is buying guns; and it works for the NRA which, as an advocate for the gun makers, claims that guns are more popular now than ever.  And people who analyze data know this.  But the generalized beliefs serve to polarize the parties, and polarization is good for business.  It’s good for the business of selling guns (‘buy more while you can!!’) as well as the business of opposing guns.

The farce of it all is a bit like “The War on Drugs“.  From Wikipadia:

“”War on Drugs” is a term commonly applied to a campaign of prohibition and foreign military aid and military intervention undertaken by the United States government, with the assistance of participating countries, and the stated aim to define and reduce the illegal drug trade.[5][6] This initiative includes a set of drug policies of the United States that are intended to discourage the production, distribution, and consumption of illegal psychoactive drugs. The term was first used by U.S. president Ronald Reagan, and was later popularized by the media.”

Most thinking people know “the war on drugs” is a kind of kabuki, where we as a nation give money to places like Pakistan, under said guise while at the same time turing a blind eye towards where the money actually goes.  In some case, it money to combat drugs goes to buy drugs.

Guns, drugs, or whatever, maybe we’re better of turning off the TV and radio (and Internet) and pursing a simple life of liberty and happiness?
